I am reviewing The Bonding by Imogen Keeper, a sci-fi erotic romance. I give it 3 out of 4.
What's it about? Simply, a princess is rescued by a space warrior and with his help, begins searching for a way to save the people of the planet she was forced to leave. Here and there were a few typos, but nothing major.
To those that are looking to read this, notice the word “erotic” in the genre description. Sex is a major part of this story. It pretty much took up the first third of the book to the point I seriously thought it were going to overshadow everything else. Also, there is no escaping a certain male bodily fluid. The author may call it “serum” but it is obvious what the stuff is. Eventually the sex eased up and allowed the story to take place, but it still held a heavy presence. I admit, I found the scenes enjoyable, but after a while, they got a bit monotonous.
As far as romance? Here, I question that description. Despite all the sex between the hero and heroine, it was really more of an actual addiction. They had to have it every few hours or they got sick. Most of the descriptions felt so much more like porn than anything else. Pretty much the only word ever used for the heroine's genitals is “p***y.” Very little tender lovemaking here. It only began to feel somewhat like a romance in the last few chapters.
Still despite those complaints, the book was hard to put down after you got through the first third crammed with sex scenes. The sci-fi portion of it was interesting. It was especially fun figuring out the Earth equivalent to many of the things in the world Mrs. Kepper created. (Eeffoc anyone?) I found myself wanting to know what had happened to the princess's people. Where we they? Could and would they be saved? That is really the main reason I rated the book as high as I did.
I wish there would have been more to the characters. Yes, you feel the princess's love for her people, but there was little more to her than that. The hero actually got on my nerves quite a few times. Anytime someone would even look at his “mate”, he would growl. Maybe if the sex addiction hadn't played such a HUGE part of their relationship, we could have seem more depth to them.
If you are looking for a good stroke story, I recommend this. If you are looking for decent sci-fi, I would recommend this. Looking for romance? I'm sure there are better things out there to get your heart fluttering.
