What actions do you take when everyone you know thinks you’re crazy and you’re going to be locked up for a while? If you’re Marlow, you gift your granddaughter a ship. Not just any ship, though; a sentient ship named Solaris.

Rynah accepts her grandfather’s gift with reservation, but by the end of the book, she’ll do anything to get Solaris back . . .

Solaris Seethes is the first in a series of four by Janet McNutly. Set in a time beyond ours, the book follows Rynah on her journey to exact revenge upon her fiancé and successfully find and guard the orange crystals of legend. To accomplish such a task, she’ll need all the help she can get. Solaris proves her use by transporting four other human beings, of their own times and cultures, to Rynah’s side. Together, they all must find the six crystals or risk destruction.

McNulty provides twists and turns throughout her first book, and leaves readers wanting so much more. Her characters are well-developed and they represent their time periods well through their actions, speech, and mannerisms. Solaris herself is also well-written. Known for her spunk and motherly nature, Solaris holds her own among the human beings that join her.

The pacing and descriptions in this first book are very well done and give the reader just enough to envision the setting and understand what is at stake for each character. Backstory is done well, too, as characters reveal more and more about themselves as the story progresses. Though I would have liked to have seen less explanation in parentheses throughout the work, I did find the piece enjoyable overall, and I am very interested to see what happens in the rest of the series. What will happen to each of our characters, and what will become of the crystals? Will there be a showdown between Rynah and Klanor, and who will triumph in the end?

I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The story developed well, the characters were organic to the plot and acted naturally, and I was able to follow the plot throughout the entire piece. There were many memorable scenes and I wanted to know much more about the cast of characters after I finished the work. If you are a fan of science fiction without all the science involved, this is a good book for you! McNulty successfully blends science-fiction, fantasy, and a bit of action/thriller in this work and I can’t wait to pick up where I left off! I recommend [/i]Solaris Seethes[/i] to readers of all ages.
