Escape by Belle Ami was an interesting read. I find myself sort of on the fence about it. I liked some parts but didn't like others. At time it almost felt like a story you would find on a fan fiction website. But I also felt as if, especially in the beginning, that the author used large or complicated words just to sound more intelligent. Or even just because they could.
So Escape is a story about Layla Rose Wallace, an American Harvard student and Cyrus Hassani, a sexy man who works for Iran's secret nuclear intel organization. When Layla traveled with her boyfriend to Dubai, they were kidnapped and taken to Iran. Cyrus was a mole inside Iran and was told by his boss to get Layla out of Iran, but should he fail he was ordered to kill her instead. This book is heavily focused on the dangers and daily life the Middle-eastern countries. Talks and attempts of rape are mentioned, I do not recommend someone reading this if that may hurt or offend them.
The things I like about Escape, was the very political and very real stance it took. It was very interesting to hear about how life is over there, and I feel fortunate to be where I am today. There was a lot of non-English words, but it didn't really bother my reading. It was very hard for me to get into this book because of how the author chose to word things but also because of how specific some things were. For example, on the second page they were describing a facility and this is how it was worded: "Laser excitation miniaturized nuclear-fuel-cycle facilities, reducing cost, space, and time involved to manufacture highly enriched uranium." And my brain was like, whoa lady what did you just read? It would kind of confuse me and I would have to read it again just to understand. There were a lot of instances like that one, so it was just a bit difficult to read. With that being said it didn't deter me from the book.
What I didn't like about this book was that it was weird, and not in the good way. I thought about how the characters were after I finished, and I just didn't like them. I couldn't relate to them and it felt hollow to me. I didn't like how the story went and didn't feel right. It kinda felt like the author was rushed at the end and decided to just wrap things up. Of course, instead of wrapping up neatly, it was all over the place and I left the book feeling nothing. I couldn't connect to the story or the characters. I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars because the way they had described the daily life and also the political life, it was very interesting and kind of suspenseful.
The "Thriller" part of this books genre is really what held this book together. I think the "Romance" part could use more romance. In general as I had said I'm kind of on the fence as to whether I recommend this book. I do but I don't. I recommend it for people who would like a glimpse into the lives of people who live in Middle-Eastern countries. But I don't recommend it for people who are looking for a sweet romance story.
Thank you!
