Tips, myths and rips; a physician’s advice “Health information to liberate us from “Snake Oil”

Morton E. Tavel, MD

This book has three main parts. The first part covers simple daily advice to improve one’s lifestyle. The second part explores some of the myths that surround our health. And the third attempts to uncover some of the more dubious ways you are tricked out of your money in the name of health.
The chapters of this book are in short bit-sized portions, allowing the reader to dip into a topic of interest to them and jump around the book a little. There is nothing heavy or overly ‘scientific’ to scare the non-medical reader.

The first section of health advice offers wide ranging suggestions from limiting our daily intake of fats and salt, to adding a little more chocolate, bell peppers, raspberries and some cranberry juice to our diet. The book also explores what to do about a common cold, use of antibiotics, which dietary supplements are useful and which are not, and discusses the pros and cons of artificial sweeteners.

In section two the book goes into the myths that swirl around the health conscious. The book tackles big subjects such as vaccinations, Genetically Modified foods, allergies, the safety of air travel,
It also covers some of the smaller, perhaps less harmful myths like bottled water, gluten free dieting, hard and soft water, whether to dry your hands with a towel or a hand dryer in a public bathroom and can you really trust a polygraph test. Over-all a lot of interesting topics covered and some interesting myth busting information. A good place to dip and dive into topics of interest.

Section three tackles the tricks used to con us out of our hard earned money in the name of health. The section starts with a bang chasing the false cures being pushed by famous false doctors, and how to recognize them. Then it tackles the use of professional athletes to push non-effective products using their fame. The book then dives into the drugs that are marketed by legitimate drug companies and medical authorities that have questionable effectiveness. It makes for some thought-provoking reading on who you can really trust with your health. The book offers a lot of general information for the unwary and how to avoid being scammed. A lot of topics covered in a light touch over the main topics. If one wanted more information the extensive footnotes and references would be a good place to start.

Overall, this is a good book for someone wanting to start exploring beyond the commonly held beliefs on what is good for us. An easy read that offers advice and tips one can pick up on and start from today to improve their health.
I rate this book a 3 out of 4. It is an easy read with a lot of topics covered, but perhaps some readers may feel it covers a lot without diving deep enough into any of the topics. A note about the editing, there are couple of edit marks still visible in the text.
