The best mysteries keep you guessing until the end. Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole keeps you guessing past the end, because it ends with a cliffhanger. As book one of a three part series, it contains action, suspense, and drama in a fast paced storyline. This book is about a handful of heroes that try to protect mankind from evil in the form of demons.
The story opens with Arthur. He is an ex reverend that has become a self described monster that needs to be locked up in a jail that few people know exist. Arthur is interesting in the fact that, you do not get a lot of detail on his situation. You know that he was once a hero, but some major incident caused him to alter his beliefs. His actions and the thoughts that he has leads me to believe that maybe his back story could stand alone as a prequel to the series. Arthur is called on to be a hero once again and reluctantly he accepts.
One reason Arthur leaves the prison is to help his adopted daughter Abigail. Abigail is probably my favorite character of the book. She is strong, resourceful, and seems to have good instincts. Her job is to track demons and destroy them or send them back to where they came from. Because of the situation that leads to Arthur having to save her, Abigail loses credibility with her bosses. Abigail’s stubbornness and determination to redeem herself makes her the one you want to root for. She wants to save Arthur in addition to the assignments given to her. Her loyalty is endearing and another quality that makes me favor her.
During one of Abigail’s assignments, she crosses paths with Haatim. He is your average Joe and has no idea of the dangers surrounding him. Haatim grew up in a religious household and even studied religion in college. Yet, he is unprepared for the world that Abigail shows him. I sort of expected him to be open minded about the possibility of demons. On the other hand, I can see him just ignoring anything that did not adhere to his broken belief system. I wanted him to utilize what he had learned more than he actually did to help Abigail. Also, most books, no matter the genre, end up with the leads falling in love or having awkward chemistry. I am glad to say that Haatim and Abigail focused more on the tasks at hand than on each other.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and I think it was well written. There were more than a few grammatical errors sprinkled throughout the copy that I read. I also could see resemblances to other action and thriller stories. Despite these things, I enjoyed reading Raven’s Peak. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who likes action and mysteries.
