Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole follows the story of Abigail Dressler in the aftermath of the death of her mentor at the hands of a powerful demon. Her quest for answers brings her to to the novel's namesake: a quiet mountain town by the name of Raven's Peak. Terrible things are happening to the people of this town, and it’s up to Abigail and her new, slightly unwilling companion Haatim to stop them.
Whilst perhaps not anything groundbreaking, Raven’s Peak was an easily digestible read with plenty of action and enough interesting plot points to keep the story running smoothly. I found it to be a fast-paced page turner with an interesting supernatural premise and, in a genre so commonly whitewashed, it was refreshing to encounter a cast of such diversified characters.
The book itself was quite short, I felt that it could have had more meat to it, possibly spending more time fleshing out characters and their stories, but the little we were given did a good job of making the protagonists multi-faceted. Haatim in particular was pushed headlong into some very bizarre and scary situations and had funny and realistic responses to them. The author took into account the physical and mental limitations of someone who is not very active or adventurous and put them to good use in the book to create some nice relatable moments for the reader that otherwise might have been alienated by the more practical and calculating Abigail.
Abigail met Haatim at a time where he was struggling with his faith, a theme integral to the story. Their journey together is as spiritual as it is physical, and together they help each other face their own demons and find their purpose. I was pleased that the author didn’t force a romantic subplot and let their relationship and trust grow in a natural way even under rather extreme circumstances. I would have liked for there to be more time spent getting to know Arthur, Abigail’s mentor, but given what a huge impact he has on the whole story I’m sure that there will be more of him to come in the trilogy and I look forward to reading the next book.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Although it didn’t make a huge impression on me and the more simplistic writing style might suit more of a Young Adult audience, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any fans of the Supernatural or Action genre looking for a quick and exciting read.
