Escape by Belle Ami is an exciting read. Harvard student Layla Rose Wallace and Mossad mole, Cyrus Hassani, run for their lives in this romantic thriller. Escape from Iran seems as impossible as fighting their powerful attraction to each other. Can Cyrus and Layla survive and escape from Iran? Will the spy give in to the passions that have lain dormant within his cold heart? This story will give you all the answers as you join Cyrus and Layla on their adventure.

Despite her father’s warnings, Layla travels to Dubai with her Saudi boyfriend to meet his parents. After a disastrous meeting, both Layla and her boyfriend are kidnapped from their hotel in Dubai, and taken to Iran. As the daughter of a renowned nuclear physicist, she is the perfect weapon to use for blackmailing her father.

Alec Wallace knows this. He also knows that he can not count on the US government to negotiate Layla’s release. He contacts his former roommate, the prime minister of Israel, to help him safe his daughter.

Cyrus Hassani is tasked to see the safe return of Layla Wallace from Iran. In breaking his cover, he makes a deadly enemy out of the deputy director of Iran’s secret intelligence organisation. He also finds himself wildly attracted to the beautiful student.

In the book itself, Stockholm syndrome is discussed. This is a condition that causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. Strictly speaking, Stockholm syndrome occurs when strong emotional ties develop between two persons where one person harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other. An example of Stockholm syndrome is what you typically find in battered housewives. That however is not the case between Lyla and Cyrus. I personally feel that both may initially suffer more from misattribution of arousal, a term in psychology that describes the process whereby people wrongly assume they feel arousal. For example, when someone is experiencing fear and they mistake their psychological response as arousal. I base this on the circumstance of their initial meeting. Cyrus and Lyla’s attraction towards each other increase as the danger of their situation increase. Their relationship however does proof to withstand the test of time. A beautiful example of the age old saying: “love concurs all”.

I rate Escape by Bella Ami a 3 out of 4 stars. Even though I do not agree with the writer's psychological labeling, I really enjoyed the book. The book was a fun read. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes military type romances with strong and passionate lead characters.
