I was intrigued to read the book Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga Book 1) by Janet McNulty. The story tells of Rynah from the planet Lanyr and her adventure to save her home planet, and the galaxy, with the help of five unlikely companions, including a spaceship that is self-aware. When Rynah’s fiancé steals the crystal that controls their planet’s atmosphere and throws the world into chaos, Rynah wants revenge. Stumbling upon her grandfather’s old spaceship called Solaris, which she discovers to have artificial intelligence and a sassy personality, she begrudgingly agrees to follow an ancient prophecy.
Four humans from different time periods in Earth’s history are brought together by Rynah and Solaris to help on this quest. The protagonists must race against time to collect powerful crystals that are hidden throughout the galaxy before they fall into the wrong hands. Along the way they face betrayal, battle space pirates, and learn how to trust one another.
I was curious to see how the author would incorporate an animated spaceship into this high adventure tale and I was pleasantly surprised. She really managed to bring life and personality to a normally inanimate object. The story itself was thrilling and I am curious if the crew will be able to complete their mission. That being said, it fell short of my expectations. Throughout the book there were a lot of parenthesis used to add detail but they just interrupted the flow of the book and made it difficult to read. It felt like I kept having to stop reading the story to read these extraneous details that I didn’t really need to know, or that could have been added in other ways to increase to the enjoyment of the book. Several points in the story felt repetitive as parts of the story were explained as if I hadn’t just read it. I also felt that there were some plot points that could have been explained better or in more detail.
The author did do an excellent job of creating believable characters. I enjoyed reading about the characters and their different perspectives on events that were occurring as well as their lives in their home time. I felt that they were all relatable in their own ways. Although they all come from very different worlds, the struggles they go through, both in their own time and together on the ship, make it easy for readers to connect with them.
Overall I rate the book 2 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed the story line, it was unique and kept me on my toes throughout the book. There were many close escapes and daring feats. However, there were a lot of extraneous details that felt unnecessary and dragging to read. There were also some parts of the plot that I would have enjoyed having more details and backstory about. I think that anyone who likes science fiction would find enjoyment in this book.
