The first book by Lincoln Cole in the World of Fire series introduces us to a prison. The prison is located in the middle of nowhere, very few people are aware of its existence, but therein lays Arthur Vangeest, one of the best if not the best Hunter the council currently has. The council of Chaldea comprises of several religious leaders from all over the world; and their primary objective is to protect Earth from the demons who are known to belong to a group called The Ninth circle. Arthur receives a visitor carrying bad news. Three hunters are missing, presumably dead, including his adopted daughter Abigail. Arthur was asked against the wishes of the council elders to help locate, and if possible neutralize this unknown threat. What he found was more than he bargained for.
The story further introduced us to Haatim. Who is a broke and grieving brother; he had just recently lost his sister to stomach cancer in India. And he had moved back to Arizona to get something going for himself. He got a cheap offer to freelance as a private detective sort of. Although the pay was not great, he took it up for a chance to write about crime on his blog and the thrill the job offered. This thrill was what got him deep into the world of demons and spells. His only chance of surviving this new crazy world lies in the hand of the person he was asked to spy on, Abigail.
Abigail Dressler is not your regular mid-twenties African American girl. No! She is a Hunter, the likes that go after demons just to send their damned souls back to hell. Abigail had been possessed months earlier in a church. But she was never told what truly happened in that church, and or what happened to her father, who barely managed to save her. She was further banned from ever looking into what had happened to Arthur. Instead, she was giving missions that involved tracking down low level demons from the Ninth circle. She was on such a mission when she met Haatim, an extremely likable but naive boy, who doesn't know who he really is. Abigail must protect him while simultaneously looking into what might have happened to her mentor.
I picked up this book not knowing what to expect. Because this is the first major book I would be reading that was not strongly recommended to me by someone or a best seller. Well, it suffices to say that the uncertainty made the book more enjoyable to read. It felt new and original. The characters were relatable, and I particularly liked Arthur. Although the book is only 300 pages (not that much)I finished it in just two days (which is still quite fast, for me). The moment the demons got under my skin, I couldn't really summon enough willpower to let go of the book. I'm not whitewashing the book. It is not without its faults. But for a horror book, there are quite a handful of gun battles which I really enjoyed.
But for such a secretive organization that has in its custody information that could change the world overnight. I found it strange that their matters were being discussed with so much carelessness on open cell phone lines. I mean, several references were made to SAT phones over the course of the book. Therefore any sensitive information should be discussed over such untraceable/untappable phone lines, or better still in person. Furthermore, without going into many spoilers. There was a scene where Abigail had to explain something very important to Haatim. And it was done during a gunfight. I felt the conversation was too long, given the number of guys that were raining in bullets on them without them returning fire. It was just a bit outstretched from reality.
Apart from these, I feel the book was well edited and found no typographical error whatsoever while reading it. I am going to rate the book 3 out of 4 and will strongly recommend it to anyone. I am strongly looking forward to reading the next book in the world of Fire series.
