Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the first installment to her four book sci-fi/fantasy series.

The story follows Rynah on her adventure to save the world after her fiance Klanor betrays her and steals the crystal from their planet Lanyr, which is said to keep the planet stable. Without the crystal, Lanyr falls and Rynah is forced to abandon her planet with an old ship her father infused with an AI. The ship's name is Solaris and according to her, the only way to stop Klanor is to follow the myths and legends of Rynah's people. The same stories that dubbed her father a madman and created a rift between them.

Helping her on this journey are four other people, all of them from different time periods but from the same planet Earth, located in the Terra sector. We have Tom (the inventor), Solon (the philosopher), Alfric (the warrior), and Brie (the lover). While most of them are quick to offer their help and adapt quickly to their situation, Brie finds herself conflicted over what is going on and immediately wishes to go home.

From the very first pages, up to the end of the book, we're kept in motion with action packed scenes and nothing feels like filler; the one-on-one conversations each character has with Solaris lets us learn about each character personally, storytime with Obiah give us insight into the crystals and their origins, and their epic flights across space as they try to escape pirates lets us see how much each character has grown into their roles in the legends.

The pacing is well done and nothing feels rushed. It's believable that they have only hunted down three out of six crystals from the legends, and I'm glad since this is only a 273 page book.

While I'd love to say this book was near perfect, I do need to point out that our only female characters were both terribly portrayed. We have Brie who is always afraid to do anything, complains, and then feels guilt over her uselessness. Her character growth is very slow and it's only until the end of the book when she finally becomes useful. Rynah, on the other hand, is so full of trying to get revenge that she doesn't connect with the rest of her crew and constantly belittles Brie in front of everyone. Her character, sadly, doesn't change much, and by the end of the book she's the same as she was at the beginning.

The only character in the whole book who had a personality was Solaris and she wasn't even human

The book does end in a semi-cliffhanger and I'm rather curious to see how that element is used in the next books, how it will change the crew's attitude, and if Rynah will finally get her act together.

Taking into account the storyline, which was my favorite part, and the flat characterization for most of our cast, I decided to rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars for a Good score.
