The Rating by me for Solaris Seeks by Janet McNulty is 2 out of 4.
Book Summary
Solaris Seeks is a science fiction, taking place in our universe. A crystal once placed in planet Lanyr as a stabilizer for the magnetic forces of that planet and pivotal for life on Lanyr is stolen by the main antagonist- Klanor. This sets the story in motion, as it is revealed there are 6 of these crystals that when combined creates a very powerful lethal weapon. It is up to Rynah (the fiancé of the antagonist Klanor) and 4 humans from earth to retrieve the other 5 crystals before Klanor gets them. The 4 humans also come from different time lines of earth, Solon a scribe, Alfric –Viking king, Brie from the year 2014 and Tom from the year 2099.
Led by Rynah they go in pursuit of the crystals facing some interesting twists and almost insurmountable challenges. In midst of all this, the narration of the story is taken on by the ship- Solaris who is as conscious as a being and is the main persona in the books. Solaris is identified as a ‘she’ and is the one who guides and saves the team, hence the name of the books- Solaris Saga. This book chronicles the beginning of that Saga.
Book Review
Solaris Seeks is a fast paced book one that does not hesitate to draw the reader into its world almost instantly. In light of the same, explanations or a back story as to what unravels is generally found along the way. There is no dearth for twists in Solaris Seeks nor for action. It is if visualized a very action packed book with characters who display sometimes a riveting personality to the reader. This for me sums the good thing about Solaris Seeks.
Now moving on to where Solaris Seeks does not strike a chord for me, it is a story that has no base or rather the feeling is that the story line is being made as its being written. That vibe is not something that I appreciate in reading a book, but in all fairness it could be that the book is targeted at a teen age group in which case it might again stressing ‘might’ be fun. The writing while fast paced and even at times engaging also has some very stark moments when it becomes apparent the writer is not very experienced. Certain lines where the author goes to explain the action as it takes place gives the book a very amateur feel.
The 4 humans and their emotions and developments I must say has been fairly captured, while not incredible. Again there are gaps in those character formations but can override it, probably because the reader is human. But when it comes to Rynah is where the ball really falls for Ms.McNulty, from the book understand that she is an adult who is engaged for marriage and moreover is someone who served in the air force fleet of Lanyr and is a security officer but behaves like a spoilt brat of a 15 year old (doubt if today’s 15 year olds are that clueless but for an analogy). Is it that the author has always written or catered more to that age group that she is unable to portray a mature adult protagonist character?
While on the topic of characters the ship Solaris is definitely intriguing! Will say that while it is a refreshing outlook, how the ship displays emotions such as ‘steam out of the vent’, ‘beep sound and silence’ is slightly out dated and feels more like what Apollo 11’s reactions, could it be a live persona! Definitely not what you would expect from the Orion Spacecraft. There are times when Solaris speaks or conveys that genuinely connects with the reader. Yet, personally feel that Solaris tries to be too human too soon, it should be a gradual process leaning in so that the reader is held captivated.
Overall an average book whose main commendation is that every page is an action packed one and some decent characters. That is the reason I give it a 2 and not a 1 as it is really not a bad book but not a good one either.
While that sums the book, another thought is whether the book is good enough to entice the reader to purchase the next one i.e. the SAGA series and that I doubt. I had to buy this one btw as I didn’t get it for free, and while it was alright as a one-time payment I would not spent money on getting to know the fate of Solaris and group. And in the end of the day, isn’t that what the Author and the publisher want!?
