Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole is a supernatural horror story that is filled with plenty of action.
Abigail Dressler is a hunter for the Council of Chaldea, a secret organization dedicated to protecting the world from supernatural threats. She goes against orders in an effort to find her mentor and surrogate father, Arthur Vangeest, also known as the Reverend, and rescue him from the demon that took him.
While on an assignment, Abigail meets Haatim Arison, a young man who has lost his faith as well as his sister, when Haatim unknowingly becomes involved with the Ninth Circle, a malevolent group that the Council is trying to destroy. It is quickly apparent that this unemployed former religious scholar is in way over his head.
Although they are an unlikely pair, Abigail and Haatim eventually work together to try to protect Raven’s Peak, a small town under attack from supernatural forces. Together this assassin and blogger battle demons, both real and ones of their own making as they attempt to escape the shadows of their past.
I love that one of the protagonists in this book is a strong female character, especially one that is young and black. Yet there was something missing in making a real connection with her. I was a little disappointed because I really wanted to bond with Abigail the way I did with Haatim and even Arthur despite the fact he appears only in the prologue.
There were some issues with formatting (I had the reviewer’s .mobi version) and a few sentences that I had to reread and they still didn’t make sense, but these distractions were relatively minor. But I think it is indicative of how the editing makes the book feel almost unfinished. It feels like it’s about 90% done and the author just couldn’t finish it or perhaps he ran out of time.
I rate Raven’s Peak 3 out of 4 stars. While it’s an exciting story, I wasn’t engaged enough to want to go out and buy the next book in the World on Fire series. However, it did pique my interest in reading more about Arthur, so The Ninth Circle, a short prequel to Raven’s Peak, will be the next book on my to read list.
In all, though Raven’s Peak is a solid book, it isn’t quite polished enough to be a must read. However, fans of action packed thrillers, especially paranormal ones, will not be disappointed.
