In this supernatural read, the audience follows Haatim, who has just returned to the U.S. in an attempt to escape his grief, and Abigail, who is also motivated by her own grief to track down the demon that took away her only real family and destroyed her reputation. After a series of events, the two cross paths and embark on a journey that I found both irresistible and compelling.

Because of this, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The author seamlessly tied the two seemingly different characters into one another’s story, and I found myself both eager and intrigued to see how each would help the other grow. The plot itself was creative and unpredictable (which is hard to do for me after reading so many YA supernatural books), and only dragged at a few semi-random points while I was reading.

Now, I say semi-random because the plot itself was engaging; it was the interactions between the characters that I was a little disappointed with. At times, the dialogue between Abigail and Haatim seemed monotonous and routine. There were certain parts where I wanted to skip past the dialogue because it just wasn’t very interesting. There was just a certain chemistry that was missing between these two, and reading the book I didn’t really feel like they were truly brought to life as well as they could have been. As a result, the characters often tended to come off as two-dimensional. However, this was the biggest flaw I found, and I still enjoyed the book a great deal.

On the other hand, while the execution was lacking just a little bit, the setup was fantastic. The backgrounds for each of the characters was fascinating and is what initially hooked me and kept me reading. Here you had an orphaned girl raised by a demon hunter, and a boy who was the son of a preacher but had seemingly lost his faith after personal tragedy. Their backgrounds gave them enough originality to seem like real, likeable people instead of typical stock characters.

Overall, I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone that thoroughly enjoys a good supernatural twist. While I have come to expect cliffhangers, the one at the end of this book was actually one that I wasn’t expecting whatsoever, and it left me wanting to immediately buy the second book and pick up Abigail and Haatim’s story where I left off.
