I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.

Solaris Seethes is a sci-fi/fantasy adventure focusing on the character Rynah and her fight to avenge her fallen planet, and it attempts to be an incredibly epic tale filled with trauma and determination, and at times it succeeds, pulling in the reader and holding their attention until the very last page, despite being a little slow to start with.

The thing that got me the most about this particular story is that everything is just okay. The writing is okay. The story is okay. The characters are okay. But nothing stands out. When I finished reading, I didn’t immediately want to go on to the second book, despite the story being left unfinished, and while I enjoyed reading the book, it just wasn’t at a level I’ve grown accustomed to when it comes to storytelling.

However, I thought the use of human myths and legends being intertwined with the storyline was very smart, especially as it put some truth to the stories and allowed the reader to garner an understanding of the old legends without having to be spoon-fed the answers, as well as giving the human characters something to relate to which gave them reason to help Rynah on her mission.

But that was about the only thing that impressed me. The foreshadowing was too heavy-handed, plot points were given a way too easily, and most of the time the characters were led into the plot rather than being forced there, to the point where the tragedy that happens at the end of the book didn’t feel like a tragedy at all. I liked the character Brie. She was smart, and the way Rynah treated her annoyed me, but the ending didn’t get to me the way it should’ve, and I think part of that is to do with the fact that the ending wasn’t really an ending at all.

Solaris Seethes just didn’t feel complete, and I understand that it’s part of a saga that holds a much bigger story, but it felt like the story ended halfway through. There was no closure, no sense of resolution, and that’s what I’ve grown to expect from any book, despite it being a part of a book series or a standalone, and I think that’s the thing that disappointed me the most.

I would only suggest picking up this book if you were going to pick up the entire series. The story is fun, and it’s easy to follow, but trying out this series by only purchasing the first book is only going to leave you disappointed, to the point where you may not even be willing to learn what happens in the rest of the story for fear of being disappointed all over again, and that’s why Solaris Seethes just didn’t provide the kind of adventure I was looking for.
