Solaris Seethes, by Janet McNulty, is a young adult science fiction book. I typically stick with science fiction and fantasy books that don't involve space, time travel, and intergalactic crisis; but I thought I'd give this particular book a shot. From what I found while reading this book, I am not a fan. This is not to say that I may never try to 'get into' that genre again, but I will not be reading the sequel to this particular saga.
This is book one for the Solaris Saga. A story line that could have been completed in one book, but was obviously stretched out to make it a multi book series. I had high hopes for this book from the beginning action. It starts off quickly but gives you very little back story. You find yourself in the middle of a fight for the planet's survival almost immediately. There are two main characters in this book. The first character, Solaris, is a ship/AI being. She is by far the most developed character in the book. The second main character in this book is Rynah. I found Rynah irritating. I believe the author wanted to make her a hardened, tough, and complicated heroine.
As the story progresses, you are introduced to 4 more characters from Earth. I am not certain how Ms. McNulty decided upon these characters as they are from different parts of our planetary history. I won't ruin the surprise of who they are, and when they come from, but to say that it seemed like a randomizer picked them seems pretty accurate. She decided to go with very generic type fits for these characters. The all muscle man, the bookworm, the poor helpless girl with a sad past, and the techno -brain. Each of these characters needed to have a bit more depth. I was not engaged enough in their personalities to truly care how they interacted in the story line.
As the characters are introduced, they show very little shock at being thrust into a new environment and quest. They trust their kidnapper wholeheartedly and agree to go on an adventure to save the universe and collect mystical crystals. It's all just a little 'pat'. I think this is where the author lost me. Even for a young adult novel, you would expect to have a bit more complexity to this part of the book.
Being jilted by a lover is never a good thing. But to resort to deathly violence almost immediately, without sorrow or remorse is not natural. We chase the ex-boyfriend and crystals all over space. We meet pirates, an old friend, primitive societies, and briefly have to dress like a prostitute for some reason. This book just seemed to try to fill every aspect of possible story line. Perhaps the second book would tie it all together, but seeing that I barely made it through this book, I will not be finding out.
I give this book a 2 out of 4 stars.
