Health Tips Myths and Tricks

From preventive actions to “should I stop doing that?”, this book is all about what just works to bring you all the health you deserve! Besides being informative, by explaining the source of the issues, the author brings awareness to what you can do, and what you shouldn’t(!) do about many illnesses, foods and health practices, and answering questions you may have had for a long time about health myths that other books have promised to demystify but never seem to get to explain conveniently.

Being faithful to the title, the book brings the best of tips, myths and tricks for health. Each chapter focuses on a question you may have, a doubt you may want clarified or simply some aspect of life that you probably haven’t thought about thoroughly but will surely find mind blowing, in the clear way it is presented.

The author not only chose some very provoking chapter titles, but delivers with thoroughly knowledgeable information, in trying to prevent you from being scammed, or worse, from taking some dangerous medicine that might hurt you. From the benefits of drinking coffee and tea to the dangers of cigarette smoke and electronic cigarettes as its substitutes, the author exposes information from clinical trials and the known to date scientific data about these products, in an enlightening fashion.

Awesomely valuable tricks try to keep you away from the snake oil and other scams. The author exposes “legitimate authorities” that you should avoid and also teaches how to be aware of potentially dangerous scams that are delivered by the media. It is not to disregard that he finishes the book hoping that it may “contribute to the process of enlightenment”.

What surprised me the most about this book, in a positive way was that it’s not limited to food and exercise, but also has chapters on things that may affect a person’s health in unexpected ways, such as air travel, hand driers and even the use of sunscreen for prevention of premature skin aging.

On the downside, I think that the chapter ordering seems random, in a way that when you finish one chapter you don’t have any clue what’s coming next, because there is no grouping of themes. This may in fact not be possible to do at all, given the diversity of matters discussed, which can be a nice way to look at the issue.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because I learned a lot about the issues exposed, on one hand but, on another hand, there were chapters that were justified by existing scientific literature but without providing a specific reference to its source paper(s), leaving the author with no chance but to go search for that “extra” information by himself.
