Escape is a romantic fiction written by Tema Merback, an American born author who writes as Belle Ami. The book was published by The Hartwood Publishing Group, with its digital release done in January 2017.
Escape is a thrill-filled, fascinating novel as it touches on sensitive issues like Islamism, misuse of power and the dangers of foreigners living in the Middle East, especially Iran, due to its unpredictable volatility, more so to people of other religions.
The novel narrates the tough ordeal of a naïve female university student, Layla Wallace, blinded by her love for her handsome Saudi boyfriend. Things take a complete turn while they are vacationing in Dubai, and she discovers that only her father, Dr. Wallace, is all she could count on, perhaps even a stranger later. Either way, she has to fight for her freedom against all odds.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. With her ‘so real’ and well-rounded characters, Belle Ami’s descriptive writing enables the reader to ‘watch’ all scenes and unravel the spell-binding twisted plots. The book makes the reader understand and feel the negative weight of Islamism on a political/governing system.
It is also very sad to imagine that what goes on in Evin Prison could be happening somewhere around the world in real life as we speak. It also gives an impression of how unsafe countries like Iran are to foreigners, mostly tourists from countries that do not agree with Iran’s way of ruling. It only makes it worse if they happen to be non-Muslims, and I tend to agree with the writer on this, based on stories of tourists who disappear beyond trace while visiting other countries. Most of them end up being political hostages for being taken for spies, although some countries choose to ‘sacrifice’ their countrymen to avoid friction with the involved nations, especially if the hostages’ profiles are not so significant to their countries in any way. What a pity!
Escape is a memorable, captivating book that I can gladly recommend to anyone who loves romantic fictional stories with a punch of thrill and uncertainty. The unsure nature of the future holds the reader in a position of hope, wishing the best to the main characters. The book is totally worth spending your penny on.
I am, however, left wondering how wonderful it would be to watch a movie based on this lovely book. It would definitely make the theaters full. How can love be love without pain? The end of the book left me yearning for more. I’m sure I will be reading it again after a while.
