Tips, Myths and Rips: A Physician’s Advice

by Morton E. Tavel, MD

Nothing wins a case like sound science and this is what this book offers. This book weighs in on the debates such as: Is chocolate really good for you? What dietary supplements (if any) are the best? Which is better for you an artificial sweetener or sugar? Dr. Tavel sifts through all the hype and social media posts to give the facts based on valid research and experience. He discusses gluten-free diets, bottled water and probiotics. He answers nearly every question the reader wanted to ask his or her trusted primary health practitioner and felt too foolish to ask. He offers practical, no-nonsense advice to lose weight, eat healthier and to avoid costly scams.

While there is some medical jargon in the book, it is few and far between and explained while respecting the reader’s intelligence. The book was easy to read with small chapters divided into 3 sections; Tips, Myths and Tricks. Every chapter, the author backs his assertions with research and science which many would find difficult to refute.

The book is ideal for quick reference and stays with the reader long after the book is finished. The reader will feel empowered with the choices he or she makes while dining out, shopping at the grocery store, and visits to the physician. This book can also serve as great reference material and a springboard for further education. If it does nothing else, it will empower the reader to be more informed about his or her health, research new items on the market and question long held beliefs.

This book is for the individual who wants to be in charge of their health and wants to make wiser choices in terms of food, vitamins, exercise and when to visit the doctor. . The may be a little dry for some but is a valuable resource in this age of over-information. If the only thing the reader takeaways from this book is to question the sources of information and to research health decisions, this book has value and benefit.

The book may not be well-received for readers who have looked for and believe in alternative healing. The author is one-sided in that he tends to believe in scientific research and valid results. However, he informs the reader when the research is lacking even the issues he believes. The book is straightforward and asserts that good health begins with a sound mind and sound decisions.

I rate the this 3 out of 4 stars; the book was well researched and well written. An easy read that educates and informs. Dr. Tavel is someone who backs up his work with years of experience and a love for his profession and the health of people. I did find it dry at times and some minor typos, I still rate 3 out of 4 due to the wealth of information packed in this book and I find it a welcome addition to my library.
