Solaris Seethes is a sci-fi adventure novel by Janet McNulty. It begins with the invasion of Lanyr, Rynah’s home planet. Lanyr’s crystal was taken, causing the destabilization of the planet’s magnetic field. Rynah’s fiancé, Klanor, who had just proposed to her that morning, was the one who led the attack to steal the crystal. As her planet crumbles, Rynah escapes to Solaris, a talking spaceship left by her grandfather.
Rynah and Solaris set out to find six crystals that may save their world. They gather—more like kidnap—four individuals from different time periods on Earth. We have Solon the philosopher, Alfric the warrior, Brie the lover, and Tom the inventor. To find the ancient crystals, Rynah and her band of Earthling misfits must face carnivorous plants, space pirates, a sabretooth tiger, and other random obstacles that don’t seem to fit this sci-fi story.
The characters in this book lack depth and personality—except for the spaceship Solaris, who’s a very sassy momma. This is a story of unlikely heroes and a prophecy to save the world. Yeah, it’s been done a million times, and a lot of other novels have done it better. I’ll also add that the writing is mediocre. The funny thing about all this is…I loved this book!
There was something about Solaris Seethes that kept me reading. I visualized this book as a campy cartoon, which I suggest others should do when reading this. I don’t know if this was Janet McNulty’s intention, but the story shouldn’t be taken seriously. Despite what I had earlier mentioned about the characters, I still felt they were likeable. My favorites were Alfric, who’s a cliched depiction of a Viking, and Brie, who’s whiny and cowardly but possesses a goodhearted nature. I enjoyed the friendship between those two, and how Alfric cared enough to help Brie overcome her fearfulness. The different calamities that Rynah and her crew get into are unpredictable and a little kooky. They travel through space, jungle, desert, and snow. It seems the author is willing to throw anything at you.
I give Solaris Seethes 3 out of 4 stars. The writing was decent, I guess—good enough to not be considered terrible. The descriptions didn’t do enough to create a believable sci-fi world. I couldn’t give this book 4 stars, because it simply wasn’t a groundbreaking or thought-provoking piece of literature. This book has its flaws, but I still had a good time reading it, and I bet Janet McNulty had fun writing it. This book proves that a story doesn’t have to be all serious and perfect to make a reader smile.
