The author makes a reference to «snake oil». The term is used as an idiomatic metaphor for excessive and fraudulent marketing which claims to come with a revolutionary solution to a problem. The phenomenon is particularly common in areas where science can not easily relate to statements, such as anti-corrosion agents, sound enhancements and health cures.

The book consists of three parts. The first part, «tips», talks about different aids to losing weight, the importance of a good breakfast, about trans fat consumption, coffee, the possible health benefits on drinking green tea, about benefits of chocolate, foods to avoid, the benefits of cranberries, fish consumption, salt and its dangers, the dash diet, read meat, red wine and cardiovascular disease, arsenic in food, the importance of good sleep, the often misunderstood and over-treated common problem with back pain, nasal allergies and a few more tips.

The second part, «myths», talks about belief in conspiracy theories about health, irrational fears which never die, the hype on energy drinks, the fortified food myth, genetically foods and mass hysteria, the buying and consuming of organic foods, the mistake of gluten-free diets, bottled water, hard and soft water, mythical and unfounded fears, hand drying, probiotics and health, raw milk, radiation of foods, allergies, rapidity of weight loss and long term success, the safeness of commercial air travel, stretching before exercise and on the necessarily of medical tests and yearly checkups.

The third part, «tricks», talks about false cures, how typical scams are constructed, the use of professional athletes to promote useless products, more on dietary supplements, alkaline water, human growth hormone scam, scams presented by the drug companies, beware of media health authorities, the scam of detoxifying the body of unwanted substances and the standard medical care or chiropractic treatment.

The author provides tips about health and wellness, exposes the myths and the trickery on today’s health products and health claims. The author wish to provide the reader with specific examples of the misleading information being foisted off on the public as well as providing the reader with the tools to recognize the common fallacies in the thought processes that allowed such falsehoods to flourish in the first place. He writes at the end that he is hoping that his book, will, at least in a small way, contribute to the process of enlightenment.

I just can not get myself to believe in everything the books brings up, and I find it disappointing that while talking about fish, it is not mentioned anything about the difference on farmed and wild fish (salmon in particularly) when it comes to health as I would have loved to read about that. I still think that it is a good book as it encourages the reader to think for him or herself, and to not blindly believe in everything one reads or hear everywhere. The book brings up many important issues, on things that might be just myths or what might be just tricks. I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
