Raven's peak by Lincoln Cole is the first book in the world on fire series. I initially didn't want to continue reading the book after the first chapter because of the concept of demons which I am not overly fond of. But on overcoming my bias, I was so captivated by the book that I almost didn't put it down in the two days it took to finish it, and even then I find myself going back to some parts, reading & rereading it.

The book started on an exciting note introducing Arthur vangeest referred to as the reverend who was asked to help save Abigail and some others who had been captured by a strong demon. The book describes Abigail's journey in finding a way to bring back her mentor(Arthur) who gave himself to save her. In her fight against evil, she meets Haa Tim, a young man who was at a crossroad in his life having lost his faith in God & all he used to believe in. She helped save his life & countless other lives not knowing that he would end up saving her. She also helped him rekindle his faith.

The book extols the importance of sacrifice, commitment, & above all, faith. We are made to understand that in the fight against evil, much more than courage & sacrifice, faith is the winning card. Also that good & evil, wrong & right have no absolute meaning - interpretations are usually subjective & contextual. It describes following your instincts & doing what you believe in. The author tries to unite various religions in the fight against evil.

The author vividly describes the characters & scenes making them come alive to me. I had a hard time choosing my favourite character - Abigail with her dedication, strong will & kind nature or Haatim who started off confused & ended up taking a firm stand on faith & ready to fight his father for what he believes in. I'll go with Abigail in this book because I admire her strength of character.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This is because the story of Arthur wasn't told- how did he end up in prison? Who was he before then? What happened to his family? This & many more questions are what I hope the author addresses in his subsequent books in the series. I would recommend this book for all ages although the concept of demons might be a little scary for the younger age group.
