When I began reading Yesterday by Samyann I believed it to be a romance novel, but it turned out to be an excellently woven novel about love, mystery and reincarnation. Telling a tale from both past and present to show how history is still relevant in our present lives.

The story focuses on a young woman named Amanda Parker living in present day Chicago. Her life abruptly changes when she saves the life of Mark Callahan, a Chicago policeman, in a freak accident. Amanda and Mark are drawn together as they both feel as they have met each other before. As they attempt to understand their strange bond, Amanda and Mark search to learn about their past lives. With Amanda’s glimpses into the past, we experience the lives of children during the American Civil War and the tragedy experienced during the Chicago Fire of 1871. While in the present, Amanda lives a life filled with tragedy and loss and begins a self-journey of acceptance and understanding, while Mark tags along the journey to provide support and to convince Amanda of his love.

It is evident that Samyann put in an effort on the historical aspect, the history of Chicago and the War is expertly woven into the story without making it seem dry. The history was used well to explain the difficulties that were faced during the War and during the Fire of 1871. Understanding the current time and place allowed me to connect more with the characters. The author seamlessly weaved the past experiences in with the present ones, making it evident of exactly where and when you were in the story.

Amanda is an excellently crafted character that is quite realistic and the more you read, the more you began to sympathize for her. Samyann did a great job of showing the hardships someone goes through after a terrible loss and how they close their heart. Pairing Mark who is a strong and passionate character with Amanda was brilliant, as he was there to help Amanda discover her past and present self.

Overall, I would give the story a 4 out of 4 as it is a thought out and original historical fiction story. Approaching the historical aspect in a unique way, while at the same time adding romance and leaving the reader in constant suspense. A truly well-written book that should be a picked up by romance and historical lovers alike.
