These days we seem to be beset by wars and natural disasters. More so than usual? When I saw that scientists of the calibre of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and biologist Richard Dawson call for mankind to leave Planet Earth or face extinction, I was drawn to see what a theologist had to say.

Roadmap to the End of Days by Daniel Friedmann is a slim volume, illustrating his theories with numerous tables, appendices and an exhaustive bibliography. Don’t be scared off, his writing is clear and direct and the tables accessible. And, yes, there is a timeline to the end of days.

It is the third book in his Inspired Studies series. The first, The Genesis One Code, shows a clear alignment between the Creation as described in Genesis and the Big Bang theory of modern science, drawing on medieval manuscripts. It seems both could be right.

The second, The Broken Gift, takes the timeline further, from Adam on. It shows “that the appearance of humans as depicted by the fossil record matches the Genesis Chapter 1 timeline,” or so says the blurb on Amazon. I haven’t read the book (yet). It seems both could be right.

Now we face the end of days. Friedmann holds principally to the Jewish perspective, but does record that the other major religions have similar prophecies. History, he says, is circular, and looking back at biblical history one can see the cycles repeating. He shows this through tables and calculations drawn mostly from the Bible and the Torah.

Briefly, he says, God has a plan and purpose for his relationship with mankind that must and will culminate within a certain timespan. The maximum “default” time is known. It can be hastened if the criteria are met. Four times the cycle shows it could have been possible, but we missed it. The fifth and last is coming up.

When? The time is not known, but can be loosely predicted. First must come the Days of Calamity, followed by the Apocalypse. According to his calculations it’s not immediate, but not that far away.

And what happens then? He goes into that too.

Whether you ascribe to his theories or not, there is much here to shake you up and make you think, especially if you are one who ponders questions such as: Why are we here? What is our purpose? Where are we going?

And, of course, everybody wants to know what to expect from the Days of Calamity!

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars.
