Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: a Physician's Advice by Morton E Tavel, MD is a quick reference book that highlights the current medical opinions of several health tips, myths, and what the author refers to as tricks. Each chapter follows a basic format of describing the topic, showing some research (usually with a footnote referencing a study), and offering an easy to digest conclusion. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: a Physician's Advice is easily an invaluable recourse for the average person to get healthy. Some of the topics covered include: dieting, is it ok to eat chocolate/trans fat/coffee/etc, e-cigarettes, what over the counter pain meds (Tylenol, Advil, Motrin) do and their differences, vaccines, and health food marketing.
Some positives from the book include how easy it is to read, I read nearly half the book in one day (while at work), and the collection of footnotes for the reader who may want to know more about a certain topic. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: a Physician's Advice contains the questions that we should all be asking our doctors but may forget about once we get to the office. The only drawback to the information provided is that if you have done any of your own research much of Tavel's information is redundant, especially in the first section.
While there are many good things about Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: a Physician's Advice and many things I am not qualified to judge (I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv) there are several things that can be distracting for the reader. In the beginning of the book Tavel ends each chapter with a easily identifiable conclusion. Halfway through the first section (Tips) Tavel begins to vary that format and by the end of the section there is no clearly labeled conclusion, though the final paragraph of each chapter clearly states the author's conclusions on each subject.
A glaring typo in the title page of the EPUB format states the book's title is "Tips, Myths, and Rips" which changed to the correct title on the title page but carries through on the title bar of each page. Another glaring (and distracting) formatting issue is the constant changing of the font size or line spacing (thankfully the chosen fonts seem to stay consistent). Beginning in the listed reviews at the start of the book the font size changes between the first two reviews. The font size stays consistent until the middle of chapter three when there is a random section with a different choice of line breaks. From there, nearly every chapter has a change in font size or line spacing that is very distracting.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 but would give a 3.75 if I could. The information is very good but the editing was distracting enough that I felt I could not give full credit.
