Yesterday by Samyann is a delightful retelling of a story of life, love and overcoming struggles with a twist of reincarnation. Yesterday tells the story of how a woman, Amanda, and a man, Mark, find love and discover that there is much more to them than it seems. It all started when Amanda saves Mark, a policeman, from death and both felt an instant connection between the two of them.
With the help of her aunt, Mart, Amanda dived deep into her subconsciousness and traveled back through time, back when she was a little girl named Bonnie during the Civil War. Revelations of her past life sent her reeling when she realized the uncanny similarities of her life and Bonnie's.
Everyone loves a good romance book, and Yesterday is a definite mus read. It made me fall in love with the characters, especially Amanda with her strong, stubborn spirit that is a delightful and refreshing change from the damsel-in-distress women that is extremely popular nowadays. Amanda is a brave, kick-ass woman that takes charge of her life even through all the hardships she has suffered.
Mark and Amanda's romantic antics will definitely make you smile and wish you had a Mark for yourself. You can clearly feel how their feelings slowly, or sometimes quickly, grow for each other through the story. They face numerous obstacles in their way, such as Amanda's denial of her feelings and her fear of how her loved ones always end up leaving her, but thankfully Mark is there to save the day. Their love teaches us that true love never truly dies, it just gets reborn.
The only problem I had while reading is the multiple typographical errors throughout the book and the poor delivery of how a Southerner talks. The words written with the supposedly southern accent are confusing and difficult to understand. Though this problem made me stop reading a couple of times, the need to find out what happens next always prevails.
Samyann had definitely done her research regarding the historical facts of the time, location and the artifacts used in the story and the author made a great effort in connecting bits of history with the characters in an interesting fashion. It made me want to visit these places and see for myself whether what she wrote were true or just something she made up.
I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars because it is interesting enough to keep the readers on their toes with the little twists and shocking revelations in the story. The errors are not a deal-breaker for me but it may pose a bit of a problem for other readers, that is why I cannot give it a perfect score.
While you feel the sincerity and the determination of the author through the book, you can also tell that this is probably the first book they have written.
Overall, Yesterday by Samyann is an interesting read and a good addition to your bookshelves especially for people with a penchant for light romance with a hint of drama.
