Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars

This is a science fiction tale. A young woman named Rynan is devastated after her home planet is destroyed. Her only means of escape is a spaceship named Solaris that was built by her grandfather before he died.
Solaris is not your average spaceship though. She has artificial intelligence that gives her quite a personality! Throughout the book she guides Rynan through a quest her grandfather gave her, sometimes chastising her along the way. She can also control who has access to her controls. Since she is intelligent she learns as she goes and she has been learning the entire time between when she was built and when Rynan needed her.

Rynan’s quest involves finding six mythic crystals that most people don’t even believe exists. The only clues she has to follow are in an ancient prophecy her grandfather used to tell her as a child. Part of the prophecy says she will need the aid of four special people the philosopher, the warrior, the lover and the inventor.
Solaris finds these special people on Earth but they are in different times. The ship transfers them to the current time and after some confusion they agree to do what they can. They escape pirates, are captured later by the same pirates and abandoned on a frozen planet after the pirates steal Solaris.

After they figure out a little of how to survive in a frozen waste land Rynan and crew are rescued by an old friend of her grandfathers. He helps then sneak into the pirate base and steal back Solaris. One of the friends does not make it to the end of the story. If you are a fan of stories such as Star Trek you will love this book.

My only disappointment in the story is how detached and mean Rynan is with the other members of her team. Hopefully she will mature as the series continues. The book is well written and the characters are developed. The interactions between them are as expected but with a few twists. We get a peek into the background of the characters as the story progresses and it is quite enjoyable.

This book is meant for young adults. As a teacher and a mom I would recommend it for children 14 and over since the subject matter may be confusing for younger ones and there is a lot of cursing.
