If you like books that are easy to read and follow a straight path, this book is not for you. But if you like books that introduce complex stories and do not follow conventional writing styles, and you don’t mind tasking your brain from time to time, then you might have a chance of enjoying this book.
The Expelled is several stories in one, It’s a story about a man who saw the doppelganger of his wife, who was 25 years younger; it’s a story about a bus missing its way and ending up in some mystic woods where some of its passengers are killed and the investigation that followed; it’s a story about fitting in, as a migrant in another man's land and as a foreigner in one's own land. Underlying these stories though is a theme about social caste system, social culture and even a little history. This book is written in such a way that the stories are related in a way you might never have seen in any other book before.
This book left my head spinning though, as the story kept spinning out of control, it seemed the author will start a plot and then start a subplot inside that plot and then start another subplot inside the subplot such that sometimes it becomes tasking to keep up with who is who. While some people might find this style enjoyable, I generally don’t like this kind of books.
That being said, I am sure some people are fans of these kind of stories and will find this book enjoyable. The author still did a good job blending in fiction well with reality and that’s one of the things that kept me reading.
I noticed a number of typographical errors and even errors in punctuation that might affect a readers enjoyment of the book. Some sentences are not very well constructed and might have been better if shorter. I am not sure if the book was a translation or if the author is a native English writer, but the sentence constructions need to be made a little bit less complicated. The book is already complex enough without this. As an example, the sentence copied here below could have been broken into two sentences or more.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I gave the book two stars because I think that the book can still be made a little bit easier to read.So we turned back again and it took us two hours of trees to realize that the other wall hadn't disappeared, and something incredible happened, a young man with one of those laptop computers told the driver that, I think it was after six or seven turns, he said that it wasn't possible that gas wasn't depleted, that something wasn't logical, and he had made many calculations, and that he believed that the walls were imaginary, that they did not exist and that what we had to do was ignore one of them and keep going.
