Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physicians Advice by Morton E. Tavel, MD gives inside tips on the food we eat, to the medicines we take. It is the second book that he has written on medical questions that we all have. What is true and what is false? Dr. Tavel also prepares everyone about the myths that we hold or have been tricked into believing. Is chocolate, everyone's favorite, beneficial or another snake in the apple tree? When entering a public bathroom; is it better to use the hand dryer or grab a paper towel? Even questions about alternative medicines; are they just smoke and mirrors? This book goes over all those questions and more.
Throughout the three sections of the book, there is an infusion of knowledge and facts that focus on everyday living and concerns. The author is even bold enough to call out practices, drugs, and people by name. He wasn't afraid to dig deep and work hard to gather information that would take anyone else, years to complete. That is if you could even figure out what is fact versus fiction.
The book definitely has some highlights that give the reader something to think about. Chapter 11, part of the "Tips" section, is a favorite of mine. Dr. Tavel simply lists different foods and their health benefits. Peas for example "contains 8 grams of protein, 2 grams more than you'll find in a large egg". Makes you want to rethink the breakfast table! Within the "Myths" section, he discusses a controversial topic about GMO's and Organic products. It definitely sheds some light on what people think and believe is true or false while delivering a healthy dose of facts.
Overall, it was a fact-finding expedition that was surprising in different ways. However, throughout the chapters, you could definitely tell which chapters were treated with more tender love and care by their lengths. In some cases, the reader could discern a bias attitude from the author. One thing is for sure, Dr. Tavel is not a fan of alternative medicine and he is not afraid to throw the facts right in your face. Ending the book with how people are deceived was a bit heavy of an ending. I feel a few more health tips would of lighten things up a bit.
Despite a couple of typos, I found the book was well written and intellectually challenging. One such typo was In Chapter 29, "However, when don't get the sleep you need…". Obviously, it should state "However, when you don't get the sleep you need…". Another typo was in Chapter 50, "from time to time to time." Redundant to state it three times.
The book was entertaining and the author was professional and supported his findings. In the end, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book has made me interested in what the first book has to offer and hope the author will release more in the future. One thing is for sure, many things are better in moderation and exercise is always important. As the book says, "Physical exercise reduces colon cancer by 30-40%, breast cancer in women by 20-30%, lung cancer in men by 68%, and helps prevent Alzheimer's by 36%” (chapter 31). So just keep running, just not from the truth.
