Tom, Myra, and William are about to leave on a planned hike when an unexpected visitor arrives with Tom's ex-wife Ruth. Ruth just found out she has a granddaughter and hands her over to Tom. After processing the initial shock of having a granddaughter he never knew about, Tom decides to take Sara along on the hike with them. The hike is meaningful because it is a visit to Tom's grandfather, Bob-Bob's grave, in the Olympic National Park.

While on the hike, Tom show's Sara an atlatl. The atlatl is a spear thrower Tom had found under Bob-Bob's hat when he was 21 years old. One day Sara and the spear thrower went missing. After eight days of searching, Sara showed up. She had fell and hit her head, leading to the mystery of her missing for eight days. Sara lost the spear thrower during the ordeal. Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is about Sara and her tale of how she survived being alone by herself in the woods. In between hikes, Ruth had Sara go back to live her and her husband. When something not appropriate happened between Ruth's husband and Sara, Tom went to take Sara back.

The following year Sara took Tom, Myra, and William on the same hike so that she could get the spear thrower back for them. Sara had thought she rememberd where she had lost the spear thrower and was able to retrieve it with their help. Afterwards, the Buckhorn survey crew shows up leading to an exciting shocking twist.

This book has a little bit of scientific inquiry, adventure and mystery. I chose this book because I enjoy the outdoors. The characters were hiking in the wilderness throughout most of the story. The author did a very good job making you feel like you were hiking with them. I wish the book would have been based more on the hiking and camping feel rather than a majority of it on the tale. I also found it really nice to see Tom, Myra, William, and Sara becoming closer as a family the more time they spent together. Sara is considered a problem child, for them to help bring her in for the time they received with her was very pleasant.

The only complaint I have is the tale. I felt the author dragged the tale a bit too long. I found myself having trouble concentrating. It took me longer to read that part then it should have. I felt it was a bit too detailed for a tale when it would have been just fine being shorter.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I decided not to give it a 4 because I still felt the tale was too long. There were a couple of events in the book I found would not be appealing for young children. At the same time this book was very well written. There were no mistakes and it was a very easy read
