A Kingdom Forgotten by Charles W. McDonald Jr. is fantastic addition to the genres of Fantasy and Sci-Fi. The plot is structured so that past events, future events, and present events are intertwined throughout the story, which may be summarized as being about the end of times and a group of varying interests are fighting to reach their respective goals. Far from detracting from the flow, the events of the timelines actually serves to keep the reader intrigued by sudden revelations and increases the anticipation of what will happen in between these times. Magic, technology, witches, wizards, demons, angels, demigods, and more are all a part of this world and are not always at peace with one another! Intricate detail is strongly present; and McDonald Jr. wields all the tools at his disposal quite efficiently.
At the beginning I was unsure of the format with the differing timelines and the abundance of details, but as I continued to read, the details served to create the image that Mcdonald Jr. envisions for his world. I was alongside the characters, learning more about them and their circumstances and was something I enjoyed immensely. The world created comes to life to the point of making one unaware of their surroundings.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4. A great start to a series, potential reminiscent of Anne McCaffrey and R.A. Salvatore. The high rating is due to the great details, the well developed characters and worlds, the variety of syntax used, and the unique story. I wouldn’t rate it a 3 because there were almost no errors in grammar, it seems it has been professionally edited and reviewed and all other parts fit snugly against one another. A detailed puzzle that the reader watches unfold in a very pleasing manner!
One aspect I liked least was the fact that at times, the syntax used was a bit confusing. It wasn’t incorrect in any manner, but was a unique perspective of writing that I warmed up to. It gave the book its own personality almost! There was little else I found problem with, which is an amazing feat!
I found no errors while reading, though I was quite absorbed by the story written! Those who enjoy Fantasy or Sci-Fi would definitely like this book. Those who enjoy a lot of details would enjoy this book, as well as those who like a strong and flowing plot-line. As stated before, there are parts where you’re reading about a different time, but I felt it enhanced the story even more.
