Lemoncella Cocktail is a fictitious crime book written by Rene Natan, a storyteller and lover of intrigues and mysteries. The title, inspired by an alcoholic drink, is a striking title that gives no clue as to what the story is going to be; but, it hints on what the job of our protagonist is: a bartender.
It all started when Patrick Carter, a young man who is having an unfortunate time of his life, saved a drowning teen named Samantha in the Ausable River. To add to his troubles, Patrick’s life is now also in danger – the men who tried to kill Samantha might go after him too after the incident. In playing the hero, he threw himself into an affair that is much more complicated than the drowning of an innocent girl: the chasing of a dangerous arms dealer. Patrick didn't know that by plunging into cold water, he’d change the course of his life forever: he is introduced to the McLeods, the girl’s family; he finds himself working with the police as bartender and spy to solve the convoluted case; he gets an apartment and a second-hand pick-up truck when he could hardly pay his rent prior to the event; and, he discovers love in the very inconvenient situation.
The story is written in the third person point of view, which puts the reader one step ahead of the characters in the book. Despite this, Rene Natan is still able to captivate the attention of the reader by her words and style of revelation. The author did a good job at making me feel uneasy: Who finds out what? How will they find out?
The bond formed between Patrick, the McLeod family, and the police, is one that I find touching. It shows the genuine care you can give to people you are not blood-related with, a value that is usually taken for granted. Amidst the evil and danger that lurks around every corner, they somehow make each other feel safe.
However, there are times when I feel like the plot is anticlimactic. It probably resulted from the fact that it is written in third person: there is less attachment between the reader and the story’s characters. In the book, I spotted misspelled words more than three times - it can be a nuisance but it did not hinder in understanding the story.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The plot, emotions evoked, and the values seen in the story is good but the errors in writing costs it one star. I recommend this book to lovers of mystery and crime-solving. One will definitely enjoy the mental activity of putting events together, making a conclusion, and be proven right (or wrong) as the story progresses.
