A dead body is found with a broken watch on his wrist. The broken face of the watch shows the time, 11:05. Could be a coincidence, right? Not in this novel! Another body surfaces with the watch broken at 11:05. Follow Inspector Sheehan and new hire Sergeant Stewart as they try to track down this vicious killer with an obsession with the time of 11:05.

The 11:05 Murders (Inspector Sheehan Mysteries #2) by Brian O’Hare is a very stereotypical mystery. I felt very conflicted while reading this novel. I have decided on 2 out of 4 stars. I will begin with what I liked about this novel. I loved the amount of detail. Mr. O’Hare created a beautiful environment. As I was reading, I felt that I was really there. The writing is extremely and intricately detailed and descriptive.

This type of writing is very stereotypical for a detective novel. This would usually make me feel bored or like I had already read this story before. Instead, Mr. O’Hare’s writing kept me interested and attentive. I also loved the ending of this book. Although the book felt slow, I enjoyed the ending immensely. Even though I have read many mystery books, this ending surprised me. I enjoyed the second half of this book much more than the first.

Since I listed two things I liked about this book, I would like to list two things I did not like. The major thing I do not like about the book is the characters. I honestly hated every single character in the book. When the reader is introduced to Sergeant Stewart, we find out that every man in her existence, literally the first four men she meets, wants to sleep with her. She stands up for herself and is then made to feel guilty for it. She then apologizes to the men (again, most of the men in the book) who saw her as a sex object.

If this happened once I could overlook it. The problem is it happens over and over again. Constantly, Stewart meets a man who either threatens her or is sexually attracted to her. It was disgusting to me that Stewart feels guilty about standing up for herself to men. Even Inspector Sheehan, who has a new wife, jokes about her figure, refers to her as “prickly” while stating that another officer’s eyes were “out on stalks” after he saw her.

The novel was very descriptive and detailed. The ending was also excellent. On the flip side, I hated all the characters and was disgusted by the treatment and the mentality of Stewart by the men around her. I think this book would appeal to those who love mysteries and will like the characters.
