This motivational non-fiction book written by experienced and knowledgeable Career and Life Coach, Jody B. Miller, is a must read. This book is about accepting and adjusting to change that every individual may face at one time or the other. The author recounts adversities experienced by her friends and some acquaintances. These include aggressive cancers, job and monetary losses, debilitating injuries from accidents, loss of loved ones and childhood abandonment. She shares their journeys with her readers as they embrace their ordeals and strive to live meaningful and happy lives.

This book of 259 pages is structured into four parts with the respective themes: Why Shift, When to Shift , How to Shift and After the Shift . Each theme contains stories of persons of varied backgrounds responding to change. These stories depict triumph over tragedy. The characters are brave and admirable. Pictures and images throughout the book brought the stories to life and made them more interesting and credible.

The author’s conversational tone made the book easy to read. Jody shared her personal story in the first part of the book, relating how she made a shift in her life by dumping the set of crockery that was passed on to her by her grandmother and how relieved and happy she felt after getting rid of this old family tradition “ storing crockery until they gather dust.” I could relate to that tradition and the fact that she threw them away, amused me. She also gave a vivid description of her experiences on her visit to the Amazon rainforest. She shared her story relating to her teenage son who desired change in his young life and how she adjusted her life after a divorce.

This book is very informative. Throughout the book, the reader is given references so that one can easily verify the information there and do further research and reading.the Resources towards the end of the book lists all materials used for the writing of each chapter. In addition, there is a section with Additional research and articles of interest. The Appendix provides detailed information on Hindu Dieties and Archetypes, Pachamama Alliance and iFoster programs. The section with Question and Practices to Consider, forces one to do a self-evaluation. There is no need to worry about your low scoring as later she gives advice on how to achieve self-fulfilment and happiness.

I especially like the takeaways at the end of each chapter that remind readers of the salient points. I also like the fact that throughout the book, to support her theme, the author gave examples of some famous persons including Abraham Lincoln who overcame many adversities to become President of the United States of America. She mentioned others who underwent major changes to find happiness. After going through the questions, I realized I am not where I want to be and I will definitely adopt her tips and advice on how to be happy and to live a fulfilling life.

Change is inevitable and it is important that one knows how to make the necessary adjustments. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is going through any kind of change or is unfulfilled, regardless of background, age, race, religion, faith, culture or nationality. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars and I am looking forward to read the author’s next book Shift .
