Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is a work of Science Fiction. McNulty creates a Marvel-like universe complete with unsavory characters, desolate planets, crystals with the ability to destroy the universe and an unlikely band of heroes.

In this first novel of the Solaris Saga, we are introduced to our heroine, Rynah, on a quest to avenge the destruction of her home planet and seek revenge on her former lover, and the man who caused it all, Klanor. After the theft of an ancient crystal, the planet is all but destroyed by mass quakes and lava as the artificial gravity field is abolished. Rynah’s only way to get off the planet and survive is to find the ship, Solaris, her estranged grandfather once restored. Together sassy Solaris and stubborn Rynah transport a group of four people from different periods of time from the lowly planet in a lost sector of the universe called Earth. The prophecy states that the philosopher, the warrior, the lover and the inventor are the only ones who can stand a chance at finding the remaining five crystals and saving the universe from the man willing to wield them for evil.

I had a hard time getting into this book until the last few chapters. Right away the readers are hit with cliché lines and boring scenes. I felt as though I was watching the scenes as an outsider, and not present within the book. The author also used a lot of repetitive vocabulary within the same couple of paragraphs and used repetitive descriptions that were unnecessary. At times I saw the story was inconsistent; the author would describe something a certain way, but then change it in the next chapter.

My biggest issue with the book was character development. When the other characters were introduced, I didn’t see a connection between individual characters or between the characters and the reader. However, there was character development in the last several chapters that helped form a connection. The author also included a lot of random description in parentheses that I felt were unnecessary and broke up the flow of the novel.

That being said, I enjoyed the story line. It has a very “Guardians of the Galaxy” feel to it. Near the end of the book, I began to see more character development as we learned about who the characters were. I saw that the characters became more connected to each other and to the reader. Due to this, I began to feel subsequent emotions like remorse and excitement. I was a little disappointed that the novel ended in the middle of their adventures, but the author left off on a very intriguing cliffhanger. I do think I will continue with the rest of the saga, and I hope to see further progress on character development.

Overall, I give this novel a 2 out of 4 stars for poorly developed characters and a writing style that was hard to feel a part of. I would give a half point back (2.5 / 4) for development I saw at the end of the novel. If you are a fan of spaceships, alternate worlds and science fiction, you might want to add this to your to-read list.

Thank you for the useful review. I was debating reading this book because of its length. It sounds like the author should have started their story further into the book. I am not a fan of getting into a book so late in the story. I'm thinking I will not bother with this one.

ReadingRebecca, the novel certainly isn't on my recommend to read list. It's definitely interesting, but could have been better written
