Raven's peak
Raven's Peak is a book written by American author, Lincoln Cole. This is the first series of books called " The World on Fire". The book is a great journey through a magical world containing vampires, demons and other evil beings, but it also explores religious themes and shows us what happens when two completely different worlds collide.
The book belongs to various genres, including mystery, horror, and urban/paranormal fantasy. There are lots of scenes depicting imaginary beings and fight scenes with vampires, demons, ghosts or werewolves which have special telekinetic powers, but at the same time all the events in the book represent real life struggles, loss of faith, betrayal, dysfunctional family issues, fighting for justice and others.
The plot follows two main characters, Abigail and Haatim. Abigail is a Hunter working for the so called Ninth Circle, whose task is to protect the world from demons and prevent them from spreading the disease and madness. After a series of events and unusual circumstances, Abigail and Haatim are forced to unite and start a journey towards the awkward, remote place, called Raven's Peak, somewhere in Arizona, where many extraordinary and gruesome things happen. Haatim is a young student who left his family and moved to Arizona, crushed and devastated after the death of his 16-year-old sister. At first, Abigail's world is something unimaginable for Haatim, but as the story progresses, he is gradually becoming more and more acquainted with it.
What I liked most about the book is that the characters are so real, with virtues and flaws, representing ordinary human characteristics. They are not perfect and flawless, and the fact that they are so different makes this book really amazing. Abigail is a bad girl, fearless and persistent, a fighter ready to stand up to anyone to reach justice. On the other hand, Haatim is modest, shy, not used to anything extraordinary, which is why he finds all the events terrible and is disgusted by blood and killing. It was really interesting for me to read how their personality developed and how closer and closer they were becoming, despite all their differences. The author did a great job combining these opposites and bringing them together. Moreover, the language is simple and easy to read, the chapters change quickly, and you can basically read the book in a day. However, what I disliked about the book was the ending. I had the impression that the story was suddenly interrupted, without any specific conclusion. It is true that this is only the first among the series of books, but still, I expected somewhat different ending.
Due to the fact that the book is read so quickly, that the story leads us through a totally different world full of mystery and suspense, and since I am a fan of vampire stories, I rate this books 4 out of 4 stars. If you are a fan of magic, fantasy stories and vampire stories, then this is the right book for you.
In conclusion, this is not an ordinary book about magic or religion, nor any simple story about vampires or demons. It is actually a complicated story comprising of various themes, the most important one being the complex human relationship, redemption, and the nature of one's soul. Therefore, I highly recommend to everyone to read this book.
