Strong heart by Charlie Sheldon is an adventurous story which takes the reader on a tour to a beautiful place where magic, legend and history becomes a reality. It is about a girl named Sarah Cooley who introduced herself to a new life unexpectedly when she comes knocking on her Grandfather Tom Olsen’s door that she is meeting for the first time. Tom was planning on going on a backpacking trip with his friend Walley and walley’s daughter Mayra. They decided to bring her along because Tom wanted to pay respect to his grandfather whom he buried out in the Olympic Peninsula wilderness park about 40 years ago. Sarah being a kid has complained and all were thinking, taking her to the park was a bad idea until she started experiencing all the legend’s magic thus things reversed and she became the one taking them on the journey of a life time.
A continuous adventure, a beautiful story mixed with scientific logic kept my attention on the book. I do love fairy tales so the magical tales of the land and the stories about the legends were interesting. Also how Sheldon designed the characters and the way they were described made me picture their faces, heights, over all their body structures. Some of them resembling some people I know in real life, which made it more interesting to read. But the descriptions were too deep and too brief I got jaded and put the book away for a while.
Though a little typo “her faced” got me distracted in the middle and made me question my grammar knowledge the editing and the chapter division was really admirable. I liked how it kept the continuity of the story. Despite these mistakes that can be ignored the book took me to a place I would dream about when I fall asleep. It has the ability to keep the reader wondering “what the hell happened”, “how did they get here”, and “what’s going to happen next”. Unfortunately some of the “what happened next” questions were not answered fully.
Personally I would want to know, what happened after the adventure and What happened to the characters that left the adventure before Sarah and her pack did. After I finished the book I felt sad it was over but smiled and hugged my copy because I got so excited.
All and all I’m rating strong heart by Charlie Sheldon a 3 out of 4 stars. Besides getting a bit boring in the middle, the story really is adventurous. Those who love magical tales and stories about legends, I recommend you to read it. People with archaeological education and hobbies would love it too.
