Strong heart by Charlie Sheldon is an interesting read. In it we encounter a wide array of characters. We encounter the 13 year old stubborn teenager, Sarah; an aging solo dweller, Tom; a firm native lady, Myra; and her father William. They take us on an interesting albeit unbelievable journey of ancestral discovery. The journey is itself not devoid of strange twists and unbelievable occurrences ranging from encountering a bear that has been long extinct to relearning skills in real life acquired from a dream.
Sarah is dropped by mother unknowingly and unceremoniously at her grandfathers’, Tom; doorstep in the middle of the day. She is then transformed into an unwilling albeit strong participant in a woodsy journey who then eventually disappears and takes us on a yester-year journey in to the past. Was this her past life? It remains unclear. We are taken from the now to centuries past where names were given either based on your physical features or character.
It takes time, but we are taken through Sarah’s, now Strong heart’s journey in the before life and how she was captured along with other girls as wives for their captors. We follow her journey through treacherous waters uncertain islands and dangerous animals. These were experienced only by Sarah despite her being in the vicinity the whole time. Faced with staying lost the others are unsure as to whether to follow this seemingly confused possibly disturbed teenager or stay lost in the park.
The book is well written but leaves one with quite the number of questions. For instance; how does her journey in the past end? Does she die? Does she live? Who does she marry? What of the other characters? Where do they end up? Do they ever get to escape the woods in the present day? Too many questions end up unanswered for my liking. It is for this reason that I rate this book 3 out of 4 for although it is well and creatively written it leaves a lot unanswered.
There is a great mix of archaeological science, familial relations, native history and the supernatural within its pages. It is a good book for imaginative people as they can come up with their own imagery and conclusions. It had an unexpected twist and that is always a good thing in a book. On its own, it is a good enough book but may appeal to those looking to read through an adventure. The imagery and descriptions are really well written and creatively articulated. It was so well written that it transported and made me a participant at The Olympic National Park in the literal world.
