REVIEW FROM DRIFT TO SHIFT BY JODY.B.MILLER

This is a self-help book, whose main theme revolves around the fact, that we all should be living our lives to the maximum. It illustrates this, by narrating true stories of people who were not living their best lives and eventually find their way and purpose.

The subjects are lost, have no purpose or are not living life to their fullest potential. An event or a series of events like a bad childhood, cancer, infertility problems, an accident that disables them, divorce, wrong career choices , being fired and depression leads them to change the way they are living and concentrate on things that are most important and make them happy. In my opinion despite what they have been through, they end up in a better place emotionally, spiritually physically and financially. They became life coaches, start foundations, become mothers, artists just to name a few of the results of their transformation in spite of the circumstances they faced.

The goal of any self help book in my opinion is to mentor people and help, to make their lives better. This is a fantastic read especially because it illustrates its points through real stories. While reading the book, I couldn’t wait to get back home to find out what happened in the middle of a story or to read the next story. The use of true stories illustrates clearly the points that the author is trying to make about the rough patches and the highs and lows in life. However I did not like that the author interrupted a story in the middle to make a point. I would have preferred she let you read the story and have you reach your own conclusions, so that you can get the maximum from the book.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I didn’t give a 4 out of 4 stars because this is just another self-help book and they are millions out there. It adds no new hypothesis to self –help books. I didn’t give this book a 2 out of 4 stars because the use of true stories makes this book more understandable and enjoyable and puts it well above other self books, that go on and on with rules that tell you what to do and what not to do without really explaining why.

This book for me was a God sent and came at the exact right time as, I am facing major changes in my life. From Drift to Shift is most suited to those people whose mantra in life, at the moment is when it rains it pours, those people that believe bad things keep happening and nothing good is ever going to happen. Some of the subjects in the book face some really hard times. This book is prove that all the ‘bad’ things that happen in your life are making way for the good and contribute to your holistic growth as a person. This book is not for the pessimist’s or for those who believe in bad luck. My recommendation to the author is that, a version of this book should be made into a daily devotional, as they are many lessons to learn from it, that cannot be captured in one sitting. It should be referred to again and again, to get the maximum out of it.
