“No, Sarah. This is the Olympic Peninsula. This is a land of magic, history, and legend. A place of myth, ancient stories, ancient people.” Strong Heart a fictional book written by Charlie Sheldon captivates legends, magic and history of the Olympic Peninsula perfectly.

On a stormy May evening in the Olympic Peninsula Tom, his good friend William and William’s daughter Myra were preparing for a camping trip the following day, when three knocks on the door forever changed their lives when Tom’s troubled teenage granddaughter shows up. Before this night Tom was unaware he had a granddaughter, who was dumped on his doorstep by his ex-wife Ruth. With Sarah now under Tom’s care he is unsure whether they should cancel their camping trip. With some discussion, the trio decides to bring Sarah along with hopes they can all get to know one another, Tom is uneasy about the decision to bring her along on such a difficult trip with no backpacking skills. Tom started this journey in 1965 with his grandfather Bob-Bob who passed during the trip up the mountain. Now Tom wishes to visit Bob-Bob’s grave and complete some unfinished business before the mining begins. Tom, William, Myra nor Sarah could have predicted the multiple challenges this trip will bring them or the journey Short Bear would lead Sarah though. Will Sarah and the others survive the journey up the trail?

As the story continues the author introduces new and different characters that later become essential to the story line. With each new character that is introduced more of the past is exposed. The history of the Olympic Peninsula is revealed in an odd and fascinating way. Tom, William, Myra and Sarah are challenged more and more with every passing hour. Every chapter was a page turner you never knew what challenges the group faced or what trouble a new character would bring the group. Will the group receive any outside help or are they on their own? With every questioned that is answered, the author gives the reader more to ask. Will all be revealed at the end?

Personally, I think this book was great. It kept you captivated and wanting more. Although I didn’t fall in love with the characters in the book I did like them. The author did a great job introduces the characters and setting the scenes he fell short of making the reader fall in love. Which I think is very important. The only short step I think the author made was the transition in between the present time and Sarah’s visions. I feel like the author didn’t introduced the vision well enough and at first left me as a reader very confused on whether it was the same book or not.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Since I didn’t fall in love with the characters and the transition issue I can’t rate in 4 out of 4. Although I would still recommend even with the small issues I had it was still an excellent story.
