A failed relationship, six magic crystals, space pirates, four Earthlings from different time periods, and a spaceship that has a mind of her own all add to this interesting new space adventure by Janet McNulty, entitled Solaris Seethes.
This is the first book in the Solaris series. It starts out on our main character, Rynah's, planet just as it gets destroyed because its core crystal is stolen. Rynah recruits four people of earth, Solon from 751 B.C., Alfric from 1136, Brie from 2014, and Tom from 2099, to help her locate not only her own planet's crystals, but also the other five crystals that are written about in ancient stories. She hopes to find the crystals before they are stolen, as well, and turned into a weapon that could possibly destroy universes. This unlikely band of heroes sets out on their quest and is met with quite a few obstacles. Can the earthlings survive treacherous space? Can they locate the other five crystals, or will the get there too late? This first book of the Solaris series only gets you asking more questions before stopping and leaving you wanting more.
I would have to rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars. Unfortunately I cannot give this book a 3, because it took a lot out of me to keep reading the book. The story line alone was interesting, but I feel that there were moments in the book where it was so fast paced but then all of a sudden dropped off and was very slow. Trying to incorporate both an action packed story and an emotionally in depth story can be challenging but possible. But, in the case of Janet McNulty and her Solaris Seethes book, I do not believe she has succeeded in doing this. It was too disconjointed.
McNulty has a writing style that is hard to read. Not that it is not grammatically correct, but that it does not necessarily flow when you are reading for long periods of time. She tends to place descriptive information in the middle of sentences between parentheses. Most of the time the description can be easily placed at the beginning or end of the sentence, or even be a sentence of it's own. But she places it right in the middle of everything which sometimes makes the reader have to re-read the sentence to understand what she is referring to. Once you finally get used to this style of writing it is not as jarring, but there are still some times that it can catch you off guard.
While there are some technical issues that I find in this novel, and found it hard to get through at times, I am still giving it a 2 out of 4 stars because I did enjoy most of it. The storyline itself is interesting. It is a different take on the space journey and adventure that is popular right now. And I was curious throughout the novel about what was going to happen next, which might be the sole reason that kept me reading. But, unfortunately Book One does not give any satisfaction in the answers department.
I would suggest if anyone is really interested in space novels that this may be something they would want to read, or for someone who is looking for something that has really never been done before. Otherwise I would suggest sticking with what you know because then you will not be disappointed.
