The following is my review of Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole. I would give this book a solid 3 out of 4 stars. There are smart, well rounded characters and excellent suspense throughout touched with a bit of gruesomeness that would attract lovers of horror/thriller stories. For me the pacing slows down a bit too much at times, but taking into consideration it is part one of three it makes the need to take a little time with the story understandable.
In the beginning we are introduced to Arthur. Although he has been sequestered from the rest of society for instability it is revealed he is the only one who can neutralize a bad situation that has recently occurred. Soon it becomes obvious he is some type of demon hunter.
I was totally hooked during Arthur's journey. He has an action packed beginning sequence that was probably my favorite part of the book. He is highly skilled and intelligent and even though his actual presence was short, he remained an important topic throughout.
Next we are introduced to Haatim who is in a bad place following his sister's death. He is unemployed and uninterested in life. He accepts a job offer to gather evidence that a gentleman he just met is being followed. Haatim feels it would be an interesting change. Because of this decision he meets Abigail. Following their introduction to each other the story begins to pick back up as Haatim is thrown into the world of demon hunting.
I found Haatim to be very believable. He is a scholar in a precarious situation and his reactions are well played. Personally I am very picky on how a character is introduced to preternatural situations and in this Haatim had the readiness to accept what seemed like it came out of a nightmare then plan in a way that kept him safe without being unintelligent.
Abigail is desperate to find out where Arthur is and the characters eventually end up in the town of Raven's Peak. During this section of the story it became particularly intense when the evil was released out into the world. I found myself highly engaged with the boy who first encounters it and then the first group who become victims. I felt true sympathy for them which adds exponentially to the horror of the situation and when evil rises the humans involved seem more than just cannon fodder. The author did an excellent job of enveloping me in the situations driving the story forward and with placing me on the edge of my seat as the events unfold.
As their necessity in Raven's Peak winds down the story concludes. It is very much a cliffhanger ending as the two main characters still need to deal with the blow-back from their actions. Placing the ending where it is makes sense but could still be frustrating if one is not aware there are more books to come.
Personally I enjoyed the hunt with Abigail and Haatim. It has all the elements that make a story good; normal people in a mystic world full of suspense, reacting in surprising and intelligent ways. I would definitely recommend it.
