Finally, I got to read this amazing book that has been buzzing online. I am happy to report that it was not a disappointment. My trip to Adele is an enchanting story of how Adele’s lyrics helped three people from different parts of the world discover love, handle betrayal and embrace freedom. The one thing they have in common is love for Adele’s music. It tells a tale of just how powerful music can influence people lives and everyday choices.
In the first chapter, we are introduced to Elias. The middle aged man has gone back to Marrakesh-a town in Morocco, Africa- where he found love, unknowingly in the arms of a thirteen-year-old prostitute-Malika. Although he had to let go of any romantic feelings towards Malika after learning her age, her presence hangs in his heart. Eight years later, his yearning for her innocent love brings him back. He finds out that Malika had achieved all her dreams with the help of an Adele album he gifted her. She had learned English, stopped selling herself and left for Europe. When he eventually tracks her down at Adele’s concert in Rome, she is no longer the girl he knew. She is free.
Yaser’s story starts in the second chapter. He lives in Las Vegas and is a respected surgeon, father, and husband. However, Yaser’s marriage is crumbling. He and his wife are seeking professional help to glue back the pieces of their love. They discover that the only love they share is for Adele’s Music. Yaser books tickets to Adele’s 25 concert in Rome, to try and revive their love. But due to years of unresolved issues, they are not able to go. It is interesting how Adele’s lyrics help this couple to realize their mistakes and spark up the love they shared, eight years before.
Nadia is a phenomenal character that we meet in chapter three. The mother of one is a career woman living in Jordan, is single and loves Adele. She is described as an adamant feminist fighting for her rights both in her professional and social life, in a society that undervalues women. Nadia wishes to take her son-who adores Adele- to Adele’s concert in Rome. But due to a misunderstanding with her ex-husband, she learns that she cannot take him-just a day to the event. Although devastated, Nadia opts to forego the concert and stay with her son. Through Adele’s lyrics, she realized that it would be pointless to go without her one true love-her son.
The way Ahmed and Rana Alyaseer tell these enchanting love stories will make you yearn for love. This book is a classic tale of how music as a universal language that can bring people together. I liked descriptions of the authors. It helped to visualize the setting of the characters and their surroundings such that at some point I felt like I had been to Morrocco, Jordan and Las Vegas in one day. The authors also have a wonderful flow of thoughts and narration, it almost seems like it was written by one person.
I noticed a repetition at the beginning of chapter 13. The conversation between Elia’s and Kanza Malawi appears to be repeated. Apart from that this book is a must read. It is a magnet for any hopeless romantic like me and those of us who still believe that love conquers all. I give it a 4 out of 4 because it has been professionally edited with only one mistake. Well done Ahmed and Rana Alyaseer.
The two are siblings who share great love for Adele. They say they were inspired to write this book after attending Adele’s 25 concert in Verina, Rome. They have previously written two books in 2011 and 2014 in Arabic but did not publish. This is their first ever published English-translated book and what a success it turned out to be.
