My trip to Adele is a fictional book with three parallel story lines. While the characters are in different cities and do not interact with each other, their stories are all set to culminate at an upcoming Adele music concert. Elias is searching through the markets of Marrakesh to find a way to break a spell that separated him from the beautiful and mysterious Malika. Nadia is a single mother living in Jordan breaking traditional norms for the sake of her son and her own independence from her abusive ex-husband. Yaser lives in Las Vegas and his trying to find happiness within his marriage, which seems suffocating to him. He wants to surprise his wife with tickets to an Adele concert in the hope of reigniting the spark in their marriage.

The characters and plots are all very rich with strong cultural undercurrents. My favourite story was the one with Elias and his search for his long lost love. The magic and mysticism of Marrakesh make for a very charming and romantic setting. The story draws intrigue, keeping the reader wondering about what happened in the past and what would happen next. The character development of the elusive Malika from the first chapter till the very end of the story is interesting and satisfying.

What especially struck me as insightful about the stories is the contrasting cultural beliefs and societal norms that exist in this day and age, in the time of Adele’s music. Women like Nadia are still not free to make their own choices in a patriarchal society. Educated people like Mariam and Yasser who live in Vegas of all places, grew up in a culture that discourages dating and yet is ironically pro-marriage. Life in Marrakesh is also so far removed from modern day living and laws.

The writing is fluid and makes for easy reading. All the chapters in the books are named after different songs by Adele and each chapter ends with a verse from the song. While these little additions would definitely be a special treat to true Adele fans, they seem to make sense for the uninitiated too. A very nice touch.

I was surprised that the authors A.I. Alyaseer and R.I. Alyaseer were not able to find publishers for this wonderful book and finally published it themselves in 2016. Would definitely hope to read more from them. There were a few points in the book when I felt that it could have benefited from professional editing. Other than that, it was a very enjoyable read and I would give it 3 out of 4 stars.
