Breaking Sandcastles is about a couple with an 11 year age difference. This story is told with our characters reliving memories of their life as current events unfold. Marion was an art teacher, and Jonathan her student in his last year of high school. He is smitten with her right from the start, but she’s his teacher. She does manage to maintain a professional student/teacher relationship while trying to encourage his artistic talent.

Then, circumstances pull them apart and they go their separate ways until they are drawn back together in Paris almost 4 years later. Jonathan doesn’t give up trying to win Marion’s heart as she struggles to accept the age difference between them. When she misunderstands an overheard conversation between Jonathan and an old girlfriend her insecurities pull her away from him. It takes Jonathan some time to win her back and prove his love.

The characters in this book are well developed, and the story had such a sweet tone. It had plenty of excitement with a few twists, and a bit of heartbreak. Jonathan’s is a strong solid guy even though he’s younger than Marion. He doesn’t give up and works hard on winning her heart after finding her again. Marion has a beautiful personality, but a lot of insecurities when it comes to falling in love with someone so much younger than herself. She feels that she should allow Jonathan to find someone closer to his own age. It takes Jonathan some time to convince her to give them a chance.

The way of looking back through memories of both the main characters was interesting. Usually I find it hard to keep up with books that flash back and forth to different timelines, but this one transitioned easily, I found it hard to put down. I liked that the author concludes with a complete end as well without a cliffhanger. The story didn’t end in a happily ever after and leave you wondering what happens in their future as you see in many books. This is a book I most likely be reading again in the future. It had me smiling one minute and crying the next.

I would rate Breaking Sandcastles with 4 out of 4 stars. This book is well written, I had a fantastic time reading about Marion and Jonathan’s life, love, and experiences. I look forward to reading more from this author, it would be great to carry with a series.
