FROM DRIFT TO SHIFT How Change Can Bring True Meaning and Happiness to Your Work and Life by Jody B. Miller
This is a nonfiction book that focuses on personal development. This book has stories of individuals that have gone through tremendous changes in their lives and how they dealt with the turbulence that came with it. The stories are quite easy to relate to and offer the reader are wide range of experiences to relate with.
The stories in this book make it a very interesting read. Instead of the author telling you on how to deal with change, she allows you to learn through the experiences of other individuals. Each chapter introduces a new story with a different person and experience. There are pictures of the story owners at the start of each chapter. The pictures bring the stories to life. The author also uses the actual names of the story tellers and so one can check them out to clarify their stories. This creates trust in the information that is shared in the book.
I personally enjoyed reading this book although the author’s notes within a story kept distracting me. The author interjects the stories a couple of times to throw in her personal experience or useful statistics. This book allows you to pick lessons from each story on how to deal with change. From the title, one can expect some sort of work book om how to deal with change but this is more of a listen and learn tool. The author won’t give you step by step instructions on what to do but she highlights the lessons from the stories told and from her personal experiences too.
Although the stories are interesting, the flow of the book isn’t captivating. At some point in the book, it felt like the author was advertising the companies/events of the story tellers. If this was the intention, then it might have worked because I often closed the book and checked out the websites of the individuals/companies that were mentioned in the book. This is a bit distracting and make for a long read if one keeps being distracted by having to carry out further research or reading elsewhere.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 because I didn’t find the flow of the book captivating although the stories make for an interesting read. The stories were too summarized and left me wanting to know more about the story tellers. It’s a book that someone interested in dealing with change in their lives can learn a thing or two especially from the stories and the takeaways at the end of each chapter.
