What if you discovered that the worst creatures of your nightmares are real? Demons exist. And they’re living among us. This is what happens in Raven’s Peak, an action packed, engaging and captivating novel, first one in the “world on fire” trilogy by Lincoln Cole. It’s a thriller/mystery book with some urban fantasy aspects, and it includes demons and hunters, as well as brave and selfless main characters.

The prologue begins with Arthur, a reverend locked in prison by his own choice, who one day receives a visit from an old friend of his. This woman, Frieda, asks for his help, and this request will have him decide to leave the cell where he’d been leaving for years to rescue someone who needs him. From here the main plot is set in motion.

Throughout the book we follow the adventures of Haatim, a depressed college student who doesn’t really know what to do with his life since the death of his sister. But one day a strange man approaches him at the library and asks him to keep an eye a woman, claiming that she’s trying to kill him. Haatim, being in the mood for adventures, accepts, but nothing is how he imagined and he’ll soon find out that he’ll have to trust that woman, Abigail, to make it out alive.

The book starts in the middle of action, and it is fast-paced since the beginning. It flows effortlessly and it is very easy and light to read, due to the beautiful style of the author. Though the themes aren’t very original, I found the book enjoyable and never boring, something new happens every chapter and there are always mysteries to discover.

Another strong point are the characters. They are very realistic and developed, they aren’t perfect and that’s what makes them real. They make mistakes, show fear and have flaws, but they are very strong, brave and selfless. Both Haatim and Abigail grow up a lot during the story, they learn to trust each other and they’re always there to watch each other’s backs.

I liked the writing style as well. It’s descriptive but not to much, you can clearly see all the scenes in your mind without it being too much to process. It shows very well all the characters’ actions and thoughts, it is easy to understand and pleasant to read. The only thing I didn’t like much was that I found it a little repetitive in the dialogues, the author writed many times the word “say/said”, it is not so annoying but worth mentioning.

In conclusion I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, it’s a great book, highly recommended to all those who like the genre. I didn’t give 4 stars because it wasn’t properly edited, but overall I really enjoyed it.
