This is the first in a series of books that follows a young Catholic priest from the time he graduates from seminary in England. I think of him as an accidental priest because his choice of the priesthood was made only because he felt he did not have another option. He is sent to a small church in Florida for his first assignment. And there the adventures begin.
The priest is named Father Francis. He prefers to be called Frank but apparently none of his new parishioners think of him that way. To them he seems a bit odd with his English accent and strange ways. And for him, American ways are just as odd and difficult to understand. And the Florida weather is a shock.
The story begins while Father Francis is getting ready to leave England. Everything is new to him starting with the packing and the flight. His mother is a bit overbearing and old fashioned. She purchases him a used suitcase in purple no less. The interactions between mother and son are humorous and loving.
As one might imagine, Father Francis is not very sure of himself even leading a service. At his new parish, he has a secretary that has to take him in hand and educate him. Fortunately, she is quite capable. She has to help him with all sorts of things, starting with the correct garments to wear for his first service. Even getting dressed for a service provides opportunities for humor.
This story made me laugh out loud at times and certainly chuckle even more. The author allows the reader to get to know each main character rather well in this first book. The reader is able to see the sincere true side of each one even as they get themselves into various unusual situations.
I really enjoyed this book. I like the characters a lot, especially Father Francis. The writing is easy to ready without being childish. I like the details about living arrangements and the troubles Father Francis encounters. I was able to laugh while seeing the growth of each character and their underlying motives.
I look forward to reading more books in this series and seeing Father Francis mature into a significant part of the community. The writing style is enjoyable, and I did not find any significant proofreading errors. If the reader is looking for a fun book with good character development and detail, this is the book to read. I give this book a 4 out of 4 rating.
