Followed my Star by AR Annahita is a non-fiction book dealing with philosophy of happiness- both of an individual and the world. This is the third book in the Followed my Star series, bur can be read without reading the other two. The author is an Iranian who migrated to America at a very young age. She describes herself as an artist, a photographer and a writer with a great passion for philosophy.
Though the book is very short, it is filled with a lot of thoughts about happiness and world peace. The author begins with describing happiness and how it can be achieved by throwing away our impossible desires. Less expectations, more happiness is her mantra. Then she deals with lot of other topics like freedom, religion and their relation to politics and economy. Since she is settled in America for many years where the whole world meets, she is able to observe the various trends and happening in the field of politics, economy, healthcare, relationships, religion, freedom and race among others.
The author has stated her views on each of the above mentioned fields, but all with relevance to America. She has praises for individual freedom in America and then goes to describe how it clashes with some views of American Republican Party. She is also critical of American policies regarding homosexuality, abortion and need of tolerance towards various race and religious beliefs. She starts with God and happiness and then talks about what is wrong with healthcare, abortion policies and the bridge between rich and middle class. She feels the rich could do much more and try to shorten the rich and middle class gap.
The author feels most America’s present problem can be solved by people opting for the middle path. The middle path she envisages is the one of harmony. She feels if some of the rigid vies regarding races discrimination and religious beliefs can be moderated, it will result in harmony and joy and emotions such as anger and hatred will be kept at bay. She offers solution for every ailment in America but all depend on every individual changing their long held views and beliefs for the betterment of America, world peace and individual happiness.
Some of the author’s views seem doable but overall the book is more about the author’s personal opinion. There is some for every reader to absorb as some topics have fresh perspective for the reader. Overall, I found the book very unbalanced in many topics covered and also the author tends to contradict herself at times. This is a book which I would just have a glance and give a total miss. Hence I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
