I know Coles is pretty prolific and his books frequently get good reviews. It seems that many of them lately have this medical theme running through them. It’s nice to see Coles is being consistent with his character driven plot lines.

In all honesty I'll probably read this one, not because it sounds interesting but because it is a book of the month. Some parts seem interesting such as the corruption of politics and the importance of independent journalism, but other parts are a turn off. I'm quite frankly sick of hearing about doctors being the bad guys. While there are some unscrupulous people, it's turned into a thankless job where more people burn out than continue. Long hours (80 a week), low pay (less than the nurses during residency even though you are a "real doctor") and the eternal fear that even though you did everything you could a bad outcome could mean the end of your career.

This was a very well written review, and I'm hoping I can get through the book. If there is enough other meat to the story; it sounds like it could be interesting.

I love suspense books, and the fact that this is mixed with major issues involving corruption and the importance for fair journalism seems fascinating. I can’t wait to read this!

I was surprised to read your review after reading the sample on Amazon. Based upon the few pages in the sample provided, Hiram is a selfish individual who has no qualms about using others around him. He breaks his promises, cheats on his wife, treats women as disposable objects, and has no mercy for others. Your review suggests that there is a turning point to his character in the novel; I am now curious to see how that transformation takes place and how effective the author is at convincing us of that change.

Thanks for the wonderful review. I am always interested in political intrigue, and it seems that Hiram McDowell is at the very center of some political intrigue that could be a direct translation of the current political climate and issues. I am interested most to see if Hiram is able to reconcile his problems and grow after his fall. It seems that the woman he finds may be able to do so. I'd like to read this book simply because I am fascinated by the setup. I love well-developed characters and this book seems to achieve that. I'm going to give this one a chance.

McDowell seems like a seriously flawed character, and the storyline has lots of twists and turns to keep the reader interested. The author tackles plenty of social issues and their consequences- thanks for your review!

Having noted how some people use philanthropy to enrich themselves rather than aid the intended beneficiaries, I can identify with this book. Some philanthropic organizations are actually dens of sexual exploitation, corruption and abuse of children.

It is actually a great thing to expose these dirty acts of selfishness.

with such a selfish and arrogant protagonist at the beginning, one can't help but wonder how he will develop and be the character people expect him to be. one of the earliest on my list, i finally got its copy. looking forward to learning a lot from this one. great review!

McDowell seems as though he is a narcissistic self-centered man. Obviously because of his ways he got into trouble. I want to know more as in what did he do? I’m not to excited about this book as it really had not caught my attention, but I will put it on my reading list.

I like reading about characters who get a rude awakening from reality. As they say pride comes before a fall. I hope this character learns from his mistakes and changes his ways. Congrats on BOTD.
