I am not into memoirs but this is different. It maybe be a memoir but it has very interesting themes. Sexual, emotional, spiritual, financial, and physical abuse that lasts for over twenty years. I want to find out more about the hardships of been in a cult.

Tricked by her therapist. That is terrible and scary. I'm glad she found a good friend in Judith. Great review!

'Volunteer Review: The Cult Next Door by Elizabeth R. Buchard, Judith L. Carlone' provides the readers with enough details to read the book. It initially prepares the mind for reading. I like the fact that that the story is about the author.

I guess I have been so lucky in life that I can't even imagine a mother being verbally and physically abusive. This book shows how the impact of abuse lasts for more than 20 years. Elizabeth's story is one I am not going to miss.

This is the story of how Elizabeth Burchard became involved in a cult led by her therapist George Sharkman. Her accounts of the activity, abuse, and manipulation are prime examples of how people can become ensconced under the leadership of a charismatic authority figure.

When things started going downhill for Elizabeth, her resolve was to seek professional help. Little did she know that her fate was sealed and the man she trusted would drag her into the abyss. The book details the story of her life, both the good and the trying times.

This sounds like a great book. I think of religion when I think of colts too. I am interested in finding out what her life was like in a colt. Thank you for the book review!

Two decades of being manipulated? Wow, that's a loooong time. I'm just happy that Elizabeth was able to get away from it in the end. Kudos to the author and thank you for your insightful review!

I've been really curious lately about how cult leaders manipulate their members and if the leaders even actually believe in the doctrines they teach.

I live in NYC and I love to learn more about different kinds of cults. I can not wait to dive into this book (though some may be hard to read like abuse and such).

I can't believe this is non-fiction. There are some real sick-o's out there taking advantage of people. After reading the review I decided to try out a chapter or so. Well, I ended up reading 1/3rd of the book before I knew it. It was uncomfortable at times. A good book can make you uncomfortable at times I suppose. I kept reading to see just how depraved George is! Anyway, this review drew me in and the first few pages captivated me. I'm so relieved she made it out to tell her tale. Great read!

Thanks so much for the review and the heads up on the "disturbing" contents in this book! I think I will have to pass on this intriguing read- I'm not up for a heavy read at the moment.

Based on the reviews I know that the book isn't for me. I don't like to read books with sexual, emotional, spiritual, financial, and physical abuse. I don't like to read autobiographies especially with violence, trauma, or abuse being the main subjects. I am going to pass on reading this book.

This is a well written book that delves into an issue that confronts many people. I like the book's exposure of sexual, emotional, spiritual, financial, and physical abuse. Thanks for an enjoyable review.
